Pirates seized a tanker belonging to the Danish company Monjasa in the Gulf of Guinea. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Trade Winds portal, which tracks the movement of ships in the oceans.
The tanker under the flag of Liberia was boarded on the evening of March 25, 260 km from the port of Pointe-Noire on the southern coast of the Republic of the Congo. There is a batch of diesel on board.
In turn, the company that owns the ship informed that at the time of the seizure, 16 crew members were on board the tanker. “All sailors managed to take shelter in a protected area, they are safe,” the owner said in a statement.
The company said that it is in contact with the authorities of coastal countries, as well as a number of ships of the navies of interested states. There is evidence that French ships headed for the area where the tanker is drifting.
The coastal countries of Africa have made significant efforts in the past two years to ensure safe navigation in the Gulf of Guinea. Nevertheless, it continues to be a dangerous zone of the World Ocean due to the threat from pirates. The International Maritime Bureau notes that 19 incidents of piracy occurred in the Gulf of Guinea last year, compared to 35 in 2021 and 84 in 2020.
