Norwegian Ambassador to Tbilisi Helen Sand has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the awarding of the Sjur Lindebrekke Prize to the ex-president of Georgia in Oslo for achievements in the field of democracy and human rights. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Rustavi-2 TV channel.
As noted, the diplomat left the Foreign Ministry without commenting to journalists.
Saakashvili was awarded the Norwegian Prize on 25 March. At the ceremony in Oslo, she was handed over to the mother of former President Giuli Alasania and son Nikoloz. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Monday that awarding Saakashvili is tantamount to handing over the prize to the Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik, who killed more than 70 people.
Saakashvili secretly arrived in Georgia the day before the municipal elections in October 2021, after which he was arrested and placed in a prison in the city of Rustavi. He is charged with several criminal offenses, including organizing the 2006 murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani. On February 6 this year, the Tbilisi City Court rejected the request of the ex-president’s lawyers for his release on health grounds.
