Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir have agreed that the law on judicial reform will be frozen for the time being and resubmitted during the Knesset’s summer session to allow reform negotiations. Arutz Sheva writes about this, citing a message from the Otsma Yehudit party.

Ben-Gvir said he agreed to lift his veto on the postponement of the law in exchange for Netanyahu’s commitment to submit the law to the Knesset for approval at the next session if no agreement is reached during the holidays.

The media indicates that the Israeli prime minister planned to make a public address today, announcing the freezing of the law on judicial reform after the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and mass demonstrations. However, he decided to refrain from making a public statement after the Religious Zionist Party issued a statement demanding the immediate passage of a law to change the composition of the Committee for the Selection of Judges, the newspaper writes.

Recall that Netanyahu launched judicial reform in Israel after his return to the post of head of the country’s government in December 2022. It involves the transfer of control to the parliamentary majority over the process of choosing judges of the Supreme Court. It also removes the power of the Supreme Court to overrule government decisions.

This initiative caused discontent among the Israelis and led to mass protests and strikes.

Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog also called for an immediate halt to the judicial reform process.

Meanwhile, earlier it became known that the Knesset deputies had previously approved the first part of the judicial reform, which caused mass protests in the country. At the same time, the document still has to pass the final readings, only after that the reform will be approved.

The news is being added.
