The US authorities position themselves as an “unfriendly ally” in relation to Hungary and treat it like an adversary, since Budapest defends national interests. According to RBC with reference to the Dutch TV channel NPO, this was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto.

“The current US government positions itself as, well, let’s say, not a friendly ally towards us. They look at us as enemies. We do not consider the US an adversary, because the US is a friend of Hungary. We are allies. But the current government is positioning us as adversaries,” Szijjártó said.

According to him, this position of the United States is due to the fact that Hungary has a “conservative, patriotic, right-wing government that represents the national interests very powerfully and is not ready to accept judgments and instructions from abroad, and the current administration does not like this.”

Answering a question about relations between Hungary and Russia, Szijjarto noted that Budapest “does not strengthen ties with Russia”, but “continues dialogue and rational cooperation” with Moscow, mainly in the energy sector.

Hungary is one of the few EU countries that has refused to supply weapons to Ukraine and has repeatedly advocated the easing of anti-Russian sanctions. The statements of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Peter Szijjártó have repeatedly provoked criticism in Kyiv and Washington.
