In some regions of Russia, there is an increase in the incidence of syphilis, which may be associated with stress, as well as an increase in the number of those who do not use barrier contraceptives. Anna Sharopina, PhD, dermatovenereologist, told Gazeta.Ru about this.
Referring to Rosstat data, the doctor indicated that in January-September 2022, a significant incidence of syphilis was noted in several regions of the country – in Moscow, the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the Republic of Tyva, the Kaluga, Tver and Tomsk regions.
However, there is no talk of an epidemic yet.
“An epidemic is announced or not announced by higher authorities, having assessed the situation as a whole and having access to statistics. But the fact that we have an increase in the incidence – yes, this is unequivocal, ”confirmed the dermatovenereologist.
According to the doctor, the increase in the number of cases may be associated with several factors – psychological stress, the rejection of condoms and increased awareness among HIV carriers.
So, according to her, psychological stress can lead to a loss of control over oneself.
“Or, oddly enough, greater awareness: if, according to the results of tests, HIV-infected patients receive a viral load of 0, that is, they cease to be dangerous to others, then for some reason they forget about other diseases and decide not to protect themselves. The number of communities in whose culture it is not customary to use barrier methods of contraception is also actively growing, ”said Anna Sharopina, adding that more patients with secondary syphilis began to occur in her practice, in which not the genitals are affected, but the skin and mucous membranes.
