The US Army launched precision airstrikes against Iranian-linked Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces. According to RBC, such an order was given by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on behalf of President Joe Biden.

The Pentagon explained that it was a retaliatory strike – the decision was made after a drone attack on a coalition forces base in northeast Syria earlier in the day, March 23. One American soldier was killed and five others were injured. US intelligence decided that the drone was of Iranian origin.

“As President Biden has made clear, we will take all necessary measures to protect our people and will always respond anytime, anywhere we choose. No group will strike with impunity against our troops, ”Austin emphasized.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that the US military must leave the country. “This is our land, and it is our right and duty to liberate it. And the Americans must leave, and sooner or later it will happen, ”he said. A similar demand was voiced by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

In response, the Pentagon warned that any attack by the US military would be a “bad decision” and this should be understood by all interested parties.

The US military contingent is in Syria under the auspices of the fight against militants of terrorist groups, in particular IS (a terrorist organization banned in Russia), and supports the Kurdish YPG in this. The US authorities have repeatedly reported the elimination of members of terrorist organizations.
