France’s intention to include nuclear energy on the EU’s “clean technology” list has sparked outrage from Germany, Politico writes, citing diplomatic sources familiar with the matter.

As two unnamed diplomats told the publication, France wanted to include in the conclusions of the EU summit, which will be held on March 23-24, a mention of the importance of nuclear energy for the decarbonization of EU industry. This item was not included in the draft final document of the summit, but Paris continues to insist on it.

At the same time, for the government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which includes the Green Party, which is skeptical of nuclear energy, the position on the importance of nuclear energy is unacceptable, the publication noted. Berlin’s pressure on the European Commission, which downgraded nuclear energy in a bill (Net-Zero Industry Act) aimed at preserving the production of environmentally friendly technologies in Europe, “particularly angered Paris,” the newspaper notes.

In addition, Paris and Berlin could not agree on car engines. In early March, Germany, along with a small group of allies, including Italy, blocked an EU decision to ban sales of conventional vehicles by 2035, leading to a “scandal,” the publication said. Berlin is pushing for the exclusion of a synthetic alternative to fossil fuels from the project in the interests of its automotive industry, but the European Parliament has already rejected his request twice. This drew sharp criticism from France.
