Over the past five months, a record 25,000 Russians have entered the United States across the border with Mexico, RTVI reports, citing data from the US Border and Customs Service.
The number of Russians crossing the southern land border of the United States has increased dramatically since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. In fiscal year 2022 (which began on October 1, 2021 and ended on September 30), 21.7 thousand Russians arrived in the country, while in 2020 there were only 467 of them.
According to the US Department of Justice, since October 2022, the share of Russians who have received asylum in the country has amounted to 63%. For comparison: for Venezuelan citizens, this figure is 38%, and for Mexico – 5%.
The Wall Street Journal previously wrote about the growing number of migrants from Russia who come to the United States across the border with Mexico in search of political asylum. The publication noted that the entry rules for Russians have not changed, but the US government has allowed to pre-register for a certain time of arrival at the country’s border. Due to this, migrants are not subject to entry restrictions related to the coronavirus.
