The number of films and series by the largest Western film studios – the so-called major companies – in the leading Russian online cinemas has decreased by 1.5-2 times over the year, RBC writes, citing a study by the TelecomDaily information and analytical agency.
Analysts analyzed libraries of films and serials available for March 16, 2022 and 2023 on the Kinopoisk platforms (owned by Yandex), Ivy (independent of large holdings), Wink (Rostelecom), Okko (formerly owned by Sberbank ), Kion (MTS) and Premier (Gazprom-Media). For each platform, experts calculated the total number of titles (that is, the titles of films and series), the number of titles of Russian and foreign production, as well as separately the number of major studios: Disney, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, Paramount and Universal.
As a result, the largest drop in the volume of Hollywood content was recorded at Kinopoisk. Over the year, the number of content units from major studios for this streaming service has halved: from almost 2,000 to just under 1,000. major projects, and by the same month of 2023 there were about 1.2 thousand of them left. Of the platforms studied by analysts, the departure of Western film studios had the least effect on Okko: the amount of Hollywood content over the year decreased by about a third – from almost 3 thousand to slightly less 2 thousand
In addition, over the year, the total number of films and series available to users in the libraries of Russian online cinemas has also changed. The largest reduction – 47% – at the Ivy platform. The volume of all foreign films (not only major ones) at Evie, according to TelecomDaily, decreased by 41%. For Kion, the total number of projects decreased by 40%, from 12.3 thousand to 7.4 thousand, while the number of foreign projects decreased by 36%, from 7.8 thousand to 5 thousand. clearly: the entire library of the service decreased by only 13% (from 17.9 thousand to 15.6 thousand), and the library of foreign content – by 21% (from 12 thousand to 9.5 thousand).
