Scientists from the Medical Center at the University of Utrecht have determined the age of deterioration in the efficiency of the brain in humans. It turned out that cognitive functions decline much later than previously thought. The results of the corresponding study are published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
The scientists took a series of precise measurements using an electrode grid placed on the brain of some patients with epilepsy in preparation for surgery. By stimulating areas of the brain with an electrical current, specialists can see which regions are not responding correctly. All these works were collected over 20 years.
They found that connections in the brain become faster and faster over time, from two meters per second in children as young as four to four meters per second in people between the ages of thirty and forty. At the same time, the frontal lobe, responsible for thinking and performing tasks, develops longer than the area that controls movement.
As a result, the team concluded that the brain declines later than previously thought. Previous theories have said it occurs after 25 years of age, while new evidence suggests it occurs between the ages of 30 and 40.
