Russian environmental and environmental organizations and public associations sent an appeal to President Vladimir Putin in which they called for the abolition of the recognition of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a foreign agent.

A copy of the letter was sent to the Ministry of Justice, its text was published by the Nature Protection Alliance association, RBC reports.

The appeal was signed by representatives of 62 organizations, including the Center for Wildlife Conservation, the Russian Social and Ecological Union, the Association of Environmental Journalists of the Union of Journalists of Russia, the Society of Volunteer Forest Firefighters, the Zapovedniki Ecological Center, the Irkutsk branch of the All-Russian Society for Nature Conservation and others.

In the letter, the decision of the Ministry of Justice to recognize WWF as a foreign agent is called “extremely erroneous, unfair and unreasonable.” The authors of the appeal emphasize that this will have a negative impact on the conservation of Russian nature, and note that the activities of the foundation for the conservation of biological diversity are not political.

The Russian representative office of WWF was opened in 1994, and in 2004 the fund became a Russian national organization. He has 1,500 projects to preserve Russia’s natural resources in 47 regions of the country, according to the fund’s website. The organization received thanks from President Vladimir Putin.

Recall that the fund was entered into the register of foreign agents on March 10. The Ministry of Justice explained this decision by the fact that the organization received support from foreign sources.
