Employees of the domestic political bloc of the presidential administration (AP) of Russia are prohibited from using smartphones based on iOS and Android operating systems for official purposes, said presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

According to RBC, in this way he commented on the question of whether the Kremlin officials were really asked to “get rid of iPhones.”

“I can’t confirm the information here. Actually, smartphones cannot be used for official purposes, whatever they may be. There is no difference here,” Peskov said, adding that “it doesn’t matter which operating system – Android, iOS – it’s natural that they are not used for official purposes.” The presidential representative also noted that official negotiations and sending official materials are not carried out using smartphones.

Earlier, Kommersant, citing its sources, wrote that employees of the internal political block of the presidential administration will be obliged to abandon iPhone smartphones from April 1 for security reasons. According to the newspaper, such a term was set by Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Kiriyenko. Sources of the publication suggested that these smartphones were considered more prone to hacking and espionage by Western countries. One of the sources said officials were advised to buy Android devices, Chinese counterparts, or Russia’s Aurora.
