EU authorities have taken note of the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova and support further investigations into war crimes in Ukraine, RBC reports citing a statement by the European External Action Service (EEAS). ).
The statement said the EU views the ICC’s decision as “the start of a process to hold Russian leaders to account.” In addition, Brussels “expresses its support for the investigations of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in Ukraine and calls for the full cooperation of all participating States.”
Recall that the ICC issued a warrant for the “arrest” of Putin, as well as the children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova on March 17 in the case of the “illegal deportation” of children from the territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation. The Kremlin called this decision of the court in The Hague “unacceptable”, and the official representative of the Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that it was “legally null and void.”
