Acting Minister of Defense of Slovakia Yaroslav Nagy and Ukrainian Ambassador to Bratislava Miroslav Kastran signed an intergovernmental agreement on the transfer by the republic of 13 MiG-29 fighter jets, as well as 2 anti-aircraft missile systems of air defense (air defense) “Cube” to Kiev. This is reported by TASS with reference to the TASR news agency.
Earlier, the Slovak government decided to send MiG-29 fighters withdrawn from the national air force in August 2022 to Ukraine. Bratislava expects compensation from the US and the EU for the planes. According to Slovak media, Washington must supply military equipment to Bratislava for $700 million, and the EU undertakes to pay $200 million from a special fund.
According to the Pravda portal, Acting Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger informed in this regard that he had a telephone conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky following an extraordinary cabinet meeting. He, according to Heger, highly appreciated the efforts of Bratislava to strengthen the defense capability of his country and invited the head of the Slovak government to visit Ukraine. Heger accepted the invitation and intends to soon go on a visit to Kyiv, the portal notes.
The Russian Embassy in Bratislava, commenting on the decision to supply Kyiv, called it illegal, since “Russian-Slovak agreements clearly exclude the transfer of weapons and military equipment to third states without the permission of the producing country.”
