The Russian Foreign Ministry responded to a statement by the US State Department that Russia’s decision to suspend its participation in the START “has no legal force.” As Kommersant was told in the department, such “stuffing” is considered as part of a campaign designed to “force” Russia to restore the START regime and preserve the opportunity for the United States to unhindered “see through” the Russian strategic arsenal.

The commentary of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that the Russian side has repeatedly provided all the necessary legal justifications “in all details.” They recalled the statement of February 21. Based on the totality of the reasons set out earlier by the Russian Federation, the Russian side came to the conclusion that Washington had materially violated the START Treaty, the Foreign Ministry noted. Thus, this gave grounds for the suspension of the Treaty.

They also recalled that on February 28, the law signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin came into force on the suspension of the New START.

The day before, the United States said that they consider Russia’s decision to suspend its participation in the START Treaty “regrettable and irresponsible”, but “unenforceable.”
