The Central District Court of Tyumen invalidated the marriage of two local residents, one of whom changed sex, the joint press service of the regional courts reports.
According to the press service, the marriage has been declared invalid since September 29, 2022.
The trial began in mid-January at the request of the prosecutor. The reason was the verification of information from the city registry office: in 2022, a 33-year-old citizen applied there to change his full name and gender in documents from male to female, his application was granted. According to the press service, the Tyumen prosecutor filed a lawsuit due to the fact that “according to the Family Code of the Russian Federation, the regulation of family relations is carried out in accordance with the principles of the voluntary union of a man and a woman.”
Tyumen got married in 2019. Later, one of the spouses decided to change sex, in September 2022 this fact was officially registered. After the documents on the change of data got to the prosecutor’s office, it was decided to divorce the couple. The spouses had no children, he wrote.
The court sessions were held in a closed format, as requested by the spouses themselves. In court, the couple declared their desire to save the marriage. Their representative told local media that the couple was of different sexes when they got married, that is, the law was not violated.
