Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the Black Sea “grain deal” by phone. It is reported by Interfax with reference to Anadolu.
“The ministers discussed the subject of a grain agreement,” the agency informs.
In addition, Cavusoglu and Lavrov spoke about the prospects for bilateral relations.
Earlier on Wednesday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that Ankara would continue negotiations with the participants of the Black Sea grain initiative to extend it by 120 days, not 60.
Consultations on the subject of a grain deal were held in Geneva on Monday with the participation of a Russian interdepartmental delegation, UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths and Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebecca Greenspan. Following consultations, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said that Russia had no objections to extending the “grain deal”, but only for 60 days.
The UN took note of the position of the Russian Federation.
The grain deal was concluded in Istanbul on July 22, 2022. With the participation of the UN, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, two documents were signed – on the creation of a corridor for the export of grain from three Ukrainian ports (Chernomorsk, Odessa and Yuzhny), as well as on the removal of barriers to the export of Russian food and fertilizers. The initiative was extended in November 2022 for 120 days. So it expires on March 18th.
