Eight senators from the Democratic and Republican parties of the United States appealed to the Pentagon demanding to study the possibility of supplying the Ukrainian military with modern F-16 fighters, write Politico and Fox News.
The appeal of congressmen says that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is now “at a critical stage” and the receipt of fighter jets by Ukraine will be “a significant opportunity for the Ukrainian Armed Forces that can change the rules of the game on the battlefield.”
The senators demanded that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin provide them with an assessment of the various factors needed to make a positive decision to send before the end of this week. In particular, they expect to receive an assessment of the impact of F-16 deliveries on the development of the conflict, the likely period of training for Ukrainian pilots, the level of interest of Kiev in obtaining fighters in comparison with other weapons, and where the fighters can be supplied from immediately after production or from current stocks.
“To restore peace and security in Europe, the United States must continue to work with allies to constantly evaluate how best to support Ukraine’s efforts,” the senators concluded.
