The Slovak government will decide to send MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine, Acting Prime Minister Eduard Heger is sure.
“We believe that the government has the necessary competencies to send this unused equipment,” he said in an interview with the SME newspaper. According to him, “by doing so, the government will make a decision, and we will send MiGs to Ukraine. We won’t wait.”
Initially, it was assumed that in order for the Slovak government to make a decision, the parliament would have to adopt an appropriate resolution. However, in mid-December last year, the Slovak parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the government, after which it, led by Heger, resigned. Opposition parties are more skeptical about Ukraine’s support.
Slovakia announced its readiness to transfer the MiG-29 to Ukraine last summer, but in return demanded to provide it with more modern fighters, in particular the American F-16, or buy out the existing ones.
