The West promised Kiev a “symbolic” number of modern tanks, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine faced a shortage of weapons and fighters, which makes it impossible to be sure of the success of Ukraine’s planned counter-offensive, writes The Washington Post, citing a senior Ukrainian official.

According to the interlocutor of the newspaper, the lack of resources leads to the fact that there are no opportunities for an active attack. In addition, when going on the offensive, the Armed Forces of Ukraine risk losing “two or three times as many people,” the official said, adding that the Ukrainian military “cannot afford it.”

The military personnel of Ukraine on the line of contact also spoke about the lack of people and ammunition in an interview with the publication. In particular, the battalion commander of the 46th Air Assault Brigade with the call sign Kupol noted the value of combat experience among the military and stressed that inexperienced conscripts lack it. At the same time, according to him, there is only one soldier with combat experience, “because all experienced military personnel” are already dead or wounded.

The edition adds that such “gloomy assessments” of the situation have spread from the battlefields to government offices in the Ukrainian capital, pessimistic moods “are felt, but are not publicly expressed.” At the same time in The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism about the offensive plans. Head of the Presidential Staff Andriy Yermak said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had not exhausted their potential and pointed out that in any armed conflict there comes a stage when new personnel have to be trained, “which is happening now.”
