Currently, the situation with coronavirus in the world is “much better than ever” for the entire period of its spread, said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

According to him, the weekly number of reported deaths from this infection for the first time was lower than at the beginning of 2020, when the World Organization first recognized what was happening as a pandemic.

In his acceptance speech at the Thomas Francis, Jr. Medal for Health Contribution, Ghebreyesus stressed that “at some point this year” it will be possible to say “that COVID-19 has ended as a public health emergency of international concern.” , and like a pandemic. He also added that “the most important thing now is to remember the lessons learned from the coronavirus pandemic,” because otherwise states will repeat the cycles of “panic and neglect that have been a hallmark” of the world’s response to epidemics.

The head of WHO named three lessons that he considered significant for the world’s population: the importance of public health, the importance of science and the importance of cooperation. He also recalled that all hypotheses about the ways of the emergence of coronavirus are being considered until the relevant studies are carried out, but added that even three years after the start of the pandemic, WHO does not know how to conduct these studies due to the lack of cooperation from China.
