The United States and Russia continue to lead the global arms supplier market, but the gap between them has widened significantly over the past five years. According to RBC, this is stated in the report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
According to analysts, in 2018-2022, US arms exports grew by 14% compared to 2013-2017, and their share in the global volume amounted to 40%. Sales of Russian weapons over the same period fell by 31%; the country occupies 16% of the world market compared to 22% a year earlier.
In third place among the largest arms exporters was France; According to SIPRI, the country has increased its market share from 7.1% to 11% in five years. The top five also included China (5.2%) and Germany (4.2%).
As SIPRI notes, Ukraine imported very few different weapons from 1991 until the end of 2021, but after February 2022, when Russia launched a military operation, the situation changed. As a result, in 2022 the country became the third largest importer after Qatar and India, and in five years (from 2018 to 2022) it ranked 14th in this indicator, during this period it accounted for 2% of global military imports.
According to analysts, 29 countries supplied weapons to Ukraine last year. The main exporters were the USA (35%), Poland (17%), Germany (11%), Great Britain (10%) and the Czech Republic (4.4%).
