Four German airports will cancel 351 flights on March 13 due to a security strike. It is reported by RBC with reference to Tagesschau.
The Verdi union attributed the strike to the need to secure higher pay for night shifts and weekend work. Flights will be canceled at the airports of Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg and Hannover. This will affect about 100,000 passengers, the ADV Airports Association said.
The organization criticized the union for not announcing the strike in advance. Passengers whose flights are canceled are unlikely to be able to find alternatives, ADV noted. “The union is abusing airports to meet its demands in a conflict over public wages,” said ADV managing director Ralph Beisel.
As noted in Verdi, workers have been negotiating with the Federal Association of Security Services Workers (BDLS) for several years to increase wages. The last discussion, held in 2022, came to nothing.
The union is demanding a 10.5% increase in the wages of about 2.5 million workers across Germany, with a bonus of at least 500 euros per month. Employers responded by offering two rounds of salary increases of 5% and one-off payments of 2,500 euros. The next round of negotiations is due to take place from 27 to 29 March.
