The administration of US President Joe Biden is working on a new tightening of rules on the export of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China to prevent the Chinese industry from producing its own chips. It is reported by RBC with reference to Bloomberg.
The corresponding announcement will be made in April, the White House informed the manufacturing companies about this.
The new rules could double the number of machines that require special licenses to export (currently 17 units are required to sell). The US authorities also intend to coordinate their actions in this area with two other key chip manufacturers – the Netherlands and Japan.
The source of the agency noted that the White House at the same time does not intend to soften its restrictions, even if this is done in Tokyo and Amsterdam.
In the US, the three key chip manufacturers are Applied Materials, KLA, and Lam Research, in Japan, Tokyo Electron, and in the Netherlands, ASML, they dominate the industry. As Bloomberg notes, without access to their products, it is impossible to build factories capable of producing the most advanced semiconductors.
American corporations have warned investors that losing access to the Chinese market will cost them billions of dollars.
The previous restrictions in the United States were introduced in October 2022. The Ministry of Commerce has limited the supply of semiconductors and equipment for their production to China in order to prevent the country from using American technology to develop weapons. After that, the leading chip manufacturing equipment supply companies suspended sales and service to Chinese manufacturers. Among them are American Lam Research, Applied Materials and KLA Corporation.
