Mount Merapi erupted on the Indonesian island of Java. According to RBC with reference to the National Agency for Mitigation of Consequences of Natural Disasters, lava flows spread at a distance of 1.5 km from the crater.
Information about the victims and destruction is not given. Residents of nearby areas are prohibited from approaching the volcano at a distance of less than 7 km. The danger level has been raised to the third in the four-level classification of eruptions in force in Indonesia.
According to district officer Babadan Pos Yulianto, there were “five to six lava eruptions” in total, and if the number continues to grow, and volcanic ash and lava spread beyond 7 km, then residents are advised to evacuate. The center said in a statement that the situation is under control.
Mount Merapi with a height of 2910 m is considered one of the most active and young in Indonesia. Part of the volcano is located in the southeastern part of the Pacific Ring of Fire – on a fault line stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia. In total, there are about 130 volcanoes in the country.
