After the military entered the Litoral Penitentiary, Fausto Cobo, director of the SNAI, indicated that the so-called “death row” and the internal perimeter are controlled.
The official of the entity that controls the prisons said Tuesday morning that the military already have control of certain areas of the jail. They even entered a ward and rescued three inmates who were kidnapped.
As part of the measures activated to stop the confrontations, the Government ordered 500 members of the Armed Forces to enter the Penitentiary on Monday.
Cobo indicated in the news of Ecuavisa pending to take control of all the pavilions, he did not specify how long this would take.
The Constitution does allow the Armed Forces to act in states of exception
In the Penitentiary there are more than 7,000 inmates distributed in 12 pavilions. Each pavilion has been controlled by gangs.
The Police have linked the problem of the prisons to a dispute between criminal gangs that seek to have control of pavilions before the freedom that their leaders have obtained. Several of these gangs are related to drug trafficking.
More than 300 inmates murdered nationwide during clashes between criminal gangs inside prisons
During the weekend’s massacre, 62 prisoners were killed and 44 wounded.
Cobo, who is also director of the Center for Strategic Intelligence, said that it is necessary to reclassify violent prisoners and take them to other spaces, but acknowledged that there are no such prisons and therefore they must be conditioned. (I)
