The Mexican gang, the Gulf Cartel, has apologized for killing two U.S. civilians and handed over the perpetrators who killed them to the police, the Associated Press reports, citing a letter received from a law enforcement officer in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
According to law enforcement officers, the group handed over to the police the participants responsible for the incident – five men, one of whom had a letter from the cartel with him. In it, the Scorpions faction of the group apologized for the violence against the residents of the city of Matamoros.
The letter says that the cartel “decided to extradite those who were directly involved in these events, who are responsible for them, who acted independently and without discipline.” It is clarified that the members of the group “went against the rules”, which include “respect for the life and well-being of innocent people.”
According to NBC, citing a senior police officer, the incident occurred on March 3, four Americans were abducted, two of whom died. US citizens were shot at and kidnapped while traveling to Matamoros for a medical procedure.
The Golfo Cartel, also known as the Gulf Cartel, is based in Matamoros and is involved in drug and human trafficking, extortion, theft and counterfeiting. This is one of the oldest criminal gangs in Mexico.
