Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to resume diplomatic relations and open embassies within two months, Tasnim reported.
Ali Shahmani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and his Saudi counterpart, Musaid bin Mohammed al-Ayban, reached an agreement after several days of tripartite talks in Beijing. An agreement on the normalization of relations was reached through the mediation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as the authorities of Oman and Iraq.
Recall that diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran were severed in 2016. This was preceded by the execution in Saudi Arabia of 47 convicted of involvement in terrorism, among whom was a representative of the country’s Shiite minority, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. The execution of the preacher caused outrage in Shiite countries, including Iran. The Supreme Leader of the country, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that the rulers of Saudi Arabia will be punished. The foreign ministries of Iran and Saudi Arabia then sent an official protest to each other. Also after the execution of the preacher, Iranian protesters attacked the Saudi diplomatic mission.
