Marina Vershinina, the leading expert of the CMD Center for Molecular Diagnostics of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, told the Healthy Nutrition portal that edema occurs due to the fact that the liquid part of the blood – plasma seeps through the thin walls of the capillaries and lingers in the tissues. Severe edema can develop against the background of chronic diseases of the kidneys, heart, blood vessels, as well as hormonal disorders. And for those suffering from food allergies, an allergen product can become their provocateur – in this case, a person rapidly develops Quincke’s edema, or angioedema, in which it is necessary to call an ambulance.

“If day after day you observe swelling of the eyelids, have difficulty removing rings or putting on shoes, you see traces of elastic bands of socks on your shins, get examined by a doctor. If swelling is associated with a disease, it is necessary to establish a diagnosis as early as possible, ”said Vershinina.

The expert added that the molecules of certain substances are able to “attract” water – they are also called osmotically active. These are mainly salts, proteins, glucose. Products with such compounds, especially eaten in the evening, can cause fluid retention in the body and the actual morning edema.

The specialist listed the 5 most “edematous” products.

1. Salty foods (chips, nuts, crackers, fish, pizza)

Salts are quickly absorbed in the intestines, their level in the blood rises. And almost immediately there is a strong thirst – this is how the body tries to return the water-salt balance to optimal levels. It will take time for the regulatory systems to rid our body of excess salts and water.

2. Alcohol. He is in second place in the top products that cause puffiness. And it is not necessary to be zealous – even moderate doses of alcohol can leave marks on your face the next morning. Ethyl alcohol molecules themselves are capable of retaining water. Plus, the toxic effect of intermediate products of the breakdown of alcohol is added.
