The Ukrainian authorities will rename the South-Western railway to the Central one as part of the “derussification” policy. According to TASS, this was announced by the Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov.
According to Fedorov, this option was chosen by the majority of the voting participants in the application of the Ukrainian electronic service of public services “Дія” (“Action”).
“The South-Western and Southern branches of the Ukrzheldoroga were named even when they were geo-referenced to the Russian Empire. <…> That is why it needs to be changed. We have already chosen a new name for the Southwestern Railway. 1.1 million Ukrainians voted. Of these, more than 417.2 thousand are for the Central Railway option, the minister emphasized in his message, noting that the survey on a new name for the Southern Railway will last in the application until March 17.
In February, the Ukrainian state-owned company Ukrzheldoroga announced the launch of a three-year program for “de-Russification” — the elimination of Russian names, indications and images on the country’s railway transport facilities. In particular, it was decided to take as the zero kilometer, from which the distance on the country’s railways is measured, the Central Station of Kyiv. Previously, the signs indicated the distance from Moscow.
