Allergy to animals is not associated with their hair, but with a protein found in dander, as well as in the saliva and urine of pets, experts say. When a domestic cat licks or goes to the toilet, this substance gets into the air – and causes an allergy if a person is predisposed to it.

It is impossible to completely get rid of an allergic reaction, but there are ways to mitigate its symptoms, writes the Kuban News portal.

In particular, antiallergic drugs that do not cause drowsiness make it much easier to be around a pet. But in any case, if the owner is prone to allergies, it is better for the cat not to sleep in his bed. Pillows and blankets easily collect dust and harmful substances, and a person lies in bed seven to eight hours a day with his mouth ajar, inhaling all these allergens. As a last resort, if you can’t part with your pet, you should wash or clean blankets and pillows at least twice a month.

In addition, experts recommend cleaning and ventilating the apartment more often and be sure to purchase a humidifier. However, it will not hurt even if there is no pet in the house.

And finally, it is worth washing not only the cat tray, but also the pet itself. Bathing cats often is not worth it, but buying special wet microfiber cloths does not hurt, says asthma doctor Robert Zuckerman. Not every pet will like this, as cats are used to licking themselves, however, the animal can be gradually accustomed to wiping – and this will remove some of the allergen from its coat.
