President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a law on strengthening responsibility for crimes against the state. This was reported by the press service of the head of state. The document, in particular, provides for the death penalty for high treason for officials and military personnel.
As specified, the main goal of the document is to strengthen counteraction to crimes of extremist (terrorist) and anti-state orientation.
According to the press service, the law provides for the extension of criminal liability for treason committed by an official to all persons holding public office. At the same time, for treason committed by an official or military personnel, the possibility of applying an exceptional measure of punishment – the death penalty is introduced.
In addition, criminal liability is introduced for propaganda of terrorism, discrediting the Armed Forces, other troops and military formations.
In addition, the period of detention of persons suspected of committing treason is being increased from three to ten days.
