The Latvian government has decided to transfer to the needs of Ukraine eight cars confiscated from drivers who were detained for drunk driving, writes RBC with reference to the LSM publication.
The vehicles are planned to be handed over to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the Vinnitsa regional hospital, as well as medical institutions in Kupyansk (Kharkiv region). Latvian Finance Minister Arvils Asheradens called the government’s decision another contribution to support for Ukraine. Reinis Poznaks, the founder of the Twitterconvoy organization, which previously organized the shipment of cars to Ukraine, thanked the authorities for this initiative.
Since this year in Latvia there is a law on the confiscation of cars from citizens who were driving while intoxicated. In this case, drivers do not receive compensation for the car. According to the government, this should show violators that driving while intoxicated is not only dangerous, but also expensive. So far, more than 200 vehicles have been confiscated and are due for auction. According to Reuters, this has led, in particular, to the fact that the impounded parking lots were overcrowded. The transfer of cars to Ukraine can partially solve this problem.
