St. Petersburg is resuming the issuance of new passports, interrupted due to increased demand for registration.
According to AiF, citizens who applied in December 2022 began to receive notifications about the readiness of documents.
Passports of a new type were no longer issued at the end of January, which was due to a shortage of biometric chips.
According to Goznak JSC, in recent months there has been an increased volume of applications for the personalization of foreign passports, which increased the need for microcircuits that are built into the form of a foreign passport. Now the microcircuit manufacturer, JSC Mikron, is reconfiguring equipment to meet the increased demand for the microcircuits in question. After the re-equipment, as Goznak expects, the shortage will end within a month.
In the meantime, there is still a warning on the public services portal that “the acceptance of applications for issuing foreign passports containing an electronic storage medium (new passport for 10 years) has been suspended.”
