The US authorities are currently not ready for conflicts with “great powers”, in particular, with Russia and China, writes The Wall Street Journal, citing sources in the US Department of Defense from among current and former officials.

The publication notes that Washington entered the era of conflicts of the “great powers” five years ago, but there are obstacles to the successful conduct of the struggle. In particular, the interlocutors of the publication pointed to the backlog in the transition to new tactics due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the focus on the fight against terrorism; “pursuing” expensive weapons that have not justified themselves; disagreements within the government over defense budgets and the “urgency of the threat from Beijing”; reduction in the number of arms manufacturers; potential shortage of personnel in the armed forces. In addition, the US resources absorbs Ukraine.

The publication also emphasizes the buildup of military potential by Beijing and the possible problems of Washington in the event of a conflict in the Asian region. According to the WSJ, at least two Pentagon war games simulating such hostilities have faced the United States with serious difficulties.

To resolve these problems, the United States received the right to use new bases in Japan and the Philippines in Japan and increased funding for research and development in the military field, sources said. However, there are fears that advanced weapons will not be ready until the 2030s, and China, according to CIA officials, wants to be ready for the forceful return of Taiwan in 2027.
