The Parliament of Ukraine received a proposal to confiscate cars for drunk driving in favor of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This is reported by TASS with reference to the Verkhovna Rada.
Now, according to the laws of Ukraine, repeated driving during the year while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxication is punishable by a fine of 34,000 hryvnia ($920), deprivation of the right to drive for a period of three years, and seizure of the vehicle on the terms of payment of compensation. The bill proposes to increase the fine to 51,000 hryvnia ($1,380) and to confiscate the vehicle without compensation.
At the same time, it follows from the explanatory note to the bill that it is proposed to transfer the seized cars to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “The purpose of the bill is to improve road safety, reduce the number of road accidents (traffic accidents – TASS note) by strengthening the responsibility for driving while intoxicated and, as a result, achieving a fair approach to providing cars to the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” reads explanatory note.
