JSC “Admiralty Shipyards” (part of USC) signed a state contract for the construction of the scientific expeditionary vessel “Ivan Frolov” for the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI). The ship’s customer is the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), Kommersant reports.
According to the head of Roshydromet Igor Shumakov, the first expedition of Ivan Frolov is scheduled for 2028. During this year, design will be carried out, and the laying of the vessel will be carried out until 2024.
“The project is very important. We have five permanent stations and five seasonal ones where polar explorers work. The NES is necessary, since the previous vessel is already old, 1987 is already out of service,” said Alexander Kozlov, head of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources.
According to the government, the R/V Ivan Frolov will serve the existing Russian stations in Antarctica and the Arctic. The new ship with a displacement of about 25,000 tons will house 20 scientific laboratories and a helipad that can receive Mi-8, Mi-38 or Ka-32. “Ivan Frolov” will be able to transport the goods necessary for polar explorers and deliver groups of researchers with a total number of up to 170 people to the poles. On board it will be able to conduct various projects, including the study of the ocean floor, atmospheric phenomena and space.
