The Ukrainian military command refused to agree to the withdrawal of its units from Artemovsk (Ukrainian name Bakhmut). According to RBC with reference to the office of Vladimir Zelensky, such a decision was made following a meeting of the headquarters of the supreme commander.
The meeting was attended, among other things, by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and the commander of the Khortytsya grouping of troops Alexander Syrsky. “They spoke in favor of continuing the defense operation and further strengthening positions in Bakhmut,” the report says.
Earlier, the German newspaper Bild reported on disagreements between Zelensky and Zaluzhny regarding the prospects for further struggle for Bakhmut. It was alleged that the commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine advised, for tactical reasons, to think about withdrawing from the city. However, the political leadership of Ukraine chose to keep this settlement.
Zelensky called the situation in the Bakhmut area “difficult and painful.” At the same time, he emphasized that the Ukrainian military would not defend the city “at any cost and so that everyone would die,” but would act “reasonably.”
