President Lasso will make announcements Monday night after prison crisis meeting

After almost 72 hours of the most recent massacre registered in the country’s prison system, the pronouncement of President Guillermo Lasso is still awaited. This will take place on Monday night, after a closed-door meeting that began at noon in the Simón Bolívar room of the Guayas Government.

Ministers and other senior officials arrived at the government building to participate in the meeting called the National Agreement to face the Prison Crisis.

At the meeting, a report on the prison situation will be delivered and definitive solutions are sought to the violence that is experienced in prisons and to stop the massacres generated this year due to the gang struggle and that already raise the number of murdered inmates to about 320 cases nationwide.

Some 250 of these crimes have occurred in the Penitentiary, the most populous prison in the country, with more than 8,000 inmates spread over 12 wards.

The President greeted the press and started the working meeting and announced that after the decision was made, the news would be announced to the press.

The media await in the corridors of the Guayas governorate for the official pronouncement on the actions that will be taken to face the prison crisis.

The government spokesman, Carlos Jijón, would speak in the next few hours and President Lasso will do so at night on a national link that will be broadcast by various media.

Jijón said this Monday morning in an interview on Teleamazonas that the massacre occurred as a terrorist attack to destabilize the government and call for the president to leave.

At the meeting are representatives of the various branches of government and other entities related to the judicial system. In the Government of Guayas are:

• Fabián Fuel Revelo, General Commander of the Land Force

• Tannya Varela, General Commander of the National Police

• Iván Correa, Secretary General of the Public Administration and Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic

• Fabián Pozo, Legal Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic
