China plans to take “decisive steps” in 2023 to fight Taiwan independence and “advance the process of peaceful reunification,” a government report said.
According to Bloomberg, Beijing’s rhetoric on Taiwan remained virtually unchanged in the annual report. “We must promote the peaceful development of relations on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and advance the process of peaceful reunification of China,” Premier Li Keqiang said in particular. He also recalled the need to adhere to the One China principle and the 1992 Consensus, an agreement reached by Beijing and Taipei at their meeting in Hong Kong 30 years ago. This agreement implies recognition by both sides of the unity of China.
At the same time, as the agency notes, by “unity” each of the parties means its own interpretation. Beijing considers Taiwan its territory, and any support from the island’s authorities, including visits by representatives of foreign governments, is declared a violation of sovereignty. In turn, Taipei, which declared independence from Beijing in 1949, rejects the “one country, two systems” model proposed by China.
