Over the past day, the Taiwanese Armed Forces have recorded 4 ships and 24 aircraft of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA) in the area of the island. According to TASS, this is stated in a message released by the Taiwan defense department.
According to the report, the island’s armed forces are “monitoring the situation”, and aviation, navy and ground-based anti-aircraft missile systems are on high alert.
From the southwest, 12 PLA aircraft entered the identification zone of Taiwan’s air defense, as noted. These were BZK-005, CH-4 and TB-001 military drones, J-10, J-11 and J-16 multirole fighters, Y-8 electronic intelligence aircraft.
The PLA regularly patrols the waters around the island. Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated after Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited Taipei last August. This trip caused extreme discontent in Beijing.
Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to the island, having been defeated in the Chinese civil war. Since then, Taipei has retained the flag and some other attributes of the former Republic of China, which existed on the mainland before the communists came to power. According to the official position of Beijing, supported by most countries, including Russia, this is one of the provinces of the PRC.
