The number of injured during the massacre at the Litoral Penitentiary rises to 44; 2 are in critical condition

Of the 62 fatalities, 30 bodies have already been handed over to relatives, according to the governor of Guayas, Pablo Arosemena.

The number of injured during the massacre that occurred between Friday night and early Saturday morning at the Litoral Penitentiary rises to 44. During this new incident in said prison compound, 62 prisoners were murdered, some were even burned.

Four wounded have already been discharged and two others are in critical condition, said the governor of Guayas, Pablo Arosemena, during an interview with La Posta.

He added that of the 62 victims, 30 bodies have already been handed over to the next of kin.

One of the strategies that the government would analyze, at noon this Monday, to face the prison crisis that the country is experiencing would be for the prisons to be declared as special zones so that the uniformed members of the Armed Forces can enter the prisons.

Currently, the military only intervenes in the vicinity of prisons.

Although the governor of Guayas did not confirm this information (the declaration of the prisons as special zones), he maintained that the solution to this problem that has left several inmates murdered inside the prisons does not depend only on “smashing a button”, nor is it something automatic.

“What has to be done is being done. And it is counted, and this is key, with international support and not as a metaphor, but as a reality, “said the official.

Given the recent incidents in the Litoral Penitentiary, national government officials will hold a meeting at 12:00 this Monday.

The announcement of actions to counteract the crisis in the prisons is expected, which, according to the authorities, is related to drug trafficking.

The governor mentioned that within the actions that the government has planned, it requires the powers that a state of exception gives. However, he did not confirm that this is an approach to be discussed at the meeting.

Arosemena said that Ecuador has technical support from Colombia, the United States and Israel to deal with the prison problem. (I)
