This afternoon, around 4:00 p.m., the Catholic University paramedic, Christian Rivera, had already commented that at least two protesters were in critical condition, one of them was Henry Quezada Espinoza, whose death was confirmed.

Citizen Henry Quezada was part of the demonstration in Quito, for the El Arbolito park, where there were clashes between indigenous people and police forces.

Explosive devices and firearms are being used, said Rivera, who lamented the number of injuries that have occurred this afternoon, the most violent of the demonstrations.

On the fact, the Prosecutor’s Office reported that it opened a preliminary investigation into the death of the protester.

The violence began in the afternoon, after a group of Amazonian indigenous people first entered the House of Culture, a place the government allowed them to enter, after several days that the building was guarded by law enforcement officials.

Then, little by little, indigenous people from the mountains joined the Conaie. Another group headed towards El Arbolito park, which has traditionally been a meeting place for their assemblies.

A third group of demonstrators then decided to go to the National Assembly, but could not enter because the place was guarded by police. The legislators were not on the site, because they were holding a virtual session of the Legislative Plenary.

Since 2:00 p.m., the clashes continue tonight, despite the fact that the leader of the Conaie, Leonidas Iza, had asked to denounce the infiltrators who demonstrate violently.

Quezada becomes the third deceased in the field of demonstrations. On Monday, a young protester had died after falling down the side of a mountain when a police contingent allegedly fired tear gas at a group of indigenous people to prevent them from entering Quito.

On the other hand, on Tuesday the death of a protester in Puyo was reported, who according to indigenous organizations was hit by a tear gas bomb, while the Police say it was due to manipulating explosives. (YO)
