The G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi ended without an official joint statement. According to RBC, the heads of the foreign ministries could not agree on the wording related to the Ukrainian conflict.
“Given the polarization of opinions about Ukraine, it was not possible to reach a consensus. There are times when we do not have an agreement between the G20 countries,” said Indian Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishanankar.
Instead of the final statement approved by all participants following the meeting of the Foreign Ministers, a summary was issued, compiled by the chairman (since December 1 last year, this is India). It stated that “the majority of members condemned” the conflict in Ukraine, which “has a negative impact on the global economy.” The summary noted that “there were different views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions.” “Realizing that the G20 is not a forum for addressing security issues, we recognize that these issues can have serious implications for the global economy,” the document says.
A similar situation happened a week earlier at the meeting of G20 finance ministers and heads of central banks, where representatives of Russia and China also disagreed with the wording of other participants. Bloomberg, citing unnamed Indian officials, said Delhi was upset by the outcome. After the meeting of finance ministers and heads of central banks, a summary of the meeting from its chairman was also distributed.
It is noted that the fate of the final statement calls into question the agreement of the document at the summit of heads of state in September.
