The list of candidates for the title of honorary citizen of St. Petersburg this year included People’s Artist of the USSR Edita Piekha, blockade teacher Nadezhda Strogonova and design engineer Yuri Kormilitsin. This was announced by the chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the city Alexander Belsky.
Valery Selivanov, one of the founders of the Leningrad school of marine geology and the author of hundreds of scientific papers, also claim the honorary title.
The title of “Honorary Citizen of St. Petersburg” is the highest award of the city, which is awarded to citizens of Russia for an outstanding contribution to the development of St. Petersburg, science, art, spiritual and moral development of society. This title can be awarded by the city parliament once a year.
In 2022, the St. Petersburg deputies awarded the title of honorary citizen to Alexei Miller, Chairman of the Board of PJSC Gazprom, and Vladimir Khodyrev, President of the non-profit partnership Transport Union of the North-West, who was Chairman of the Leningrad City Executive Committee from 1983 to 1990.
The honoring ceremony traditionally takes place on City Day, May 27.
