The Moldovan authorities are preparing a “very ambitious plan for the transition to green energy”, so the country will cope without Russian gas and electricity, said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
“We can survive, we can continue to live in peace without gas or electricity from Russia,” Rechan emphasized, adding that “this, of course, means higher prices, and we need to take care of vulnerable sections of society and businesses that have suffered competitiveness” . According to the prime minister, the country’s authorities “should find compensation tools for a certain period, while the business adapts,” RBC reports.
Recean also added that the Moldovan authorities have a “very ambitious plan for the transition to green energy”, which will allow “to enter a competitive economy, an investment environment.”
In April 2022, Moldovan President Maia Sandu argued that the country would not be able to refuse gas supplies from Russia due to the lack of alternatives. In June, she said Russia could use the gas to prevent Moldova from joining the European Union. However, already at the end of February 2023, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spinu announced that Moldova had ceased to be dependent on gas from Russia.
