Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law suspending Russia’s participation in the New START Treaty. The corresponding document is published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

Recall that the agreement was concluded between Moscow and Washington, it involves the reduction of nuclear arsenals of both sides.

Putin announced the decision to suspend Russia’s participation in START-3 during his speech to the Federal Assembly. According to the head of state, changes are long overdue: in addition to the United States, there are other nuclear powers in NATO. Putin pointed out that before continuing work on the agreement, it is necessary to understand how their arsenals will be taken into account.

According to American leader Joe Biden, the Russian authorities made a “big mistake” by making such a decision. At the same time, he noted that he was confident in the ability of Russia and the United States “to fix this”, and in this situation it would be possible to find a solution.

US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, for her part, pointed out that Washington is ready to start negotiations with Moscow on START issues even “tomorrow”, if the Russian Federation itself is ready for this.
