Regular, quality sleep is the foundation of cardiovascular health. According to MedikForum, scientists after analyzing the study data came to the conclusion that an irregular sleep pattern is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and has a devastating effect on the health of the heart system.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center analyzed the effects of sleep on the health of 2,032 participants in the MESA atherosclerosis project. It turned out that people who did not monitor the regularity of their sleep, or who did not have the opportunity to follow one sleep pattern every day, had increased calcium deposits in the coronary arteries, as well as a greater number of atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries. In general, they had more severe atherosclerosis, which meant more stiffness and narrowing of their blood vessels.

Commenting on the results, the authors noted that in order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is important to practice regular sleep habits and adhere to a consistent sleep and wake-up schedule. Scientists stressed that to maintain heart health, it is important to maintain the body’s circadian rhythms without sudden shifts.
