Belgium has frozen Russian assets for 58 billion euros, and this is the largest amount among all European states. This was reported in a release on the website of Finance Minister Vincent Van Petegem.
In August 2022, the amount was 50.5 billion euros.
Financial transactions worth 191 billion euros were also blocked. The report states that the measures affect 1,789 Russian companies or citizens who fell under the sanctions.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the Belgian customs has tightened checks against Russia and Belarus. More than 90 thousand declarations and almost eight thousand containers were checked.
Other EU countries blocked Russian assets for smaller amounts. Thus, on February 18, the German authorities reported that during the year of the conflict in Ukraine, they froze 5.32 billion euros of Russian assets. Switzerland announced in December 2022 that it had blocked Russian assets worth just over 7.5 billion euros since February 28.
In Moscow, such actions of the West are considered illegal and compared to theft.
