Regardless of the political commitment of those who hold the functions of CPCCS advisers, the creation and existence of this body by the Montecristi Constitution is the most serious wound inflicted on the democracy of our country. He’s still bleeding.

This is the reason why many Ecuadorians are unsuccessfully advocating its disappearance or disenfranchisement, with a mea culpa for having approved its creation, as a result of the constitutionally induced political sacrifice of citizens. We have given life to Saturn, who devours his daughters, the tools of democracy.

Sergio Ramírez on the revocation of citizenship ordered by the Nicaraguan authorities: “They can flay you, but your country will not take it away from you even if they leave you raw”

It is reached by direct popular election of citizens, which does not diminish the democratic shortcomings of its existence at all.

We are probably the only case in the democratic world with a body with such characteristics and powers, except perhaps the Moscow Politburo, which initially and by coincidence functioned with the same number of members as the CPCCS.

seen in another way

With this body, the system of checks and balances of the functions of the rule of law, the essential basis of democracy, disappears. The power of the minorities, transformed into a majority by the power given by the weakness of the 270 legally permitted political parties and movements, atomizes the will of the people. No democracy gives this unlimited power to democratic majorities, even worse if it is majority minorities.

Democratic is an unimaginable organism of characteristics and power attributed to seven people, of which only four in practice subject 17 million Ecuadorians to their will, suppressing their ability to choose and determine representatives of the instruments or real sources of power. . Unfortunately, this is our reality.

The unwritten rules of politics dictate that for democracy to exist, at least two political forces must be together: the government and the opposition. Without one of them, democracy disappears.

What we know and keep silent about democracy

Any opposition, apart from a constitutional check on the regime, always requires a “corrupt”, “enemy of the people” or “dictator”, like a boxer needs a punching bag to train him, to punch him politically.

Within the Ecuadorian democratic contest, the legislative opposition must apply fair play, no cheap shots, for the survival of its rival, on which it itself depends. Violation of the rules would put the Ecuadorian regime on the ropes, unable to govern, forcing it to cross the death penalty, the only constitutional means at its disposal, which would undoubtedly further weaken democracy, dragging the Tyrians and Trojans with it into an uncertain future.

Preservation of democracy even with its weaknesses, without an open letter to the regime, is a civic imperative that gives the government the controllability to survive constitutionally, preventing us from entering the institutional spin of reserved forecasts, generating greater insecurity and violence in the streets, which would surely destroy the rule of law.
